VACo’s Transportation Steering Committee, chaired by Fairfax County Supervisor Jeff McKay, held an informational meeting on June 15 at the Hanover County Government Complex. The purpose of the meeting was to provide committee members with background information on key issues that could take center stage during the 2018 session of the General Assembly. Items on the meeting agenda included public transportation, VDOT’s arterial protection program, “Smart Scale,” VDOT’s Revenue Sharing Program, and the general status of transportation funding in Virginia. Some of the presenters were Jennifer Mitchell, Director of the Department of Rail and Public Transit; Garrett Moore, VDOT’s Chief Engineer; Kimberly Pryor, VDOT’s Director of Infrastructure Investment; and Julie Brown, Director of VDOT’s Local Assistance Division. Sterling Rives, Hanover County Attorney, presented the Committee with a proposed position statement supporting increased transportation funding during the next legislative session. The Committee deferred action on the statement until its next meeting on August 21.

On June 22, VACo’s Environment and Agriculture Steering Committee, chaired by Wythe County Supervisor Tim Reeves, also held a similar informational meeting. Topics on the agenda included stormwater, the status of Chesapeake Bay Cleanup efforts, solar energy, and land application of biosolids. The presenters were Lewie Lawrence, Director of the Middle Peninsula Planning District; Russ Baxter, Deputy Secretary of Natural Resources for the Chesapeake Bay; Chris Wood, DEQ’s Biosolids Guidance and Regulations Coordinator; and Joe Lerch of VACo, who provided a status report about solar energy.
