When Accomack County was faced with implementing a cybersecurity program with limited resources and aggressive timeframes, they called Assura. Rather than a once-and-done project, the County subscribed to Assura’s Fractional Chief Information Security Officer service called Virtual Information Security Officer (Virtual ISO™). Assura’s assigned Virtual ISO™ worked closely with Accomack’s County Administrator and Chief Information Officer (CIO) to implement a cybersecurity program that fully complies with National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS), and Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) requirements. This included development of a countywide cybersecurity policy approved by the Board of Supervisors, supporting program documentation, and cybersecurity monitoring with minimal cost.
When Virginia HB 2178 requiring registrars to strengthen the cybersecurity posture of the Commonwealth’s electoral system was signed into law, many counties were scrambling, but Accomack County was already covered. The cybersecurity program and services implemented by Assura ensured that they only needed to make minor adjustments to comply with the new law. Their program is now ready well before the November 2020 elections.
